How to Make Silky Smooth Buttercream Frosting
I’ve always liked baking.
Since middle school, I have loved nothing more than throwing a batch of brownies in the oven, or making a birthday cake for my family. My go-to cake was a vanilla box cake, chocolate frosting, and M&Ms to spell out “Happy B-Day!” I’ve even made my own cake (in the same style, of course) almost every year since I was 13. Baking was a very rewarding thing to do, in that I got to eat something awesome for a few days.
But then I got into the baking shows on the Food Network channel.
Kids and Spring Baking Championships, and Halloween Wars, in particular, showed me my baking game could use a serious upgrade or two. Watching children make these insane desserts from scratch…if they could do it, why couldn’t I? Since then, I’ve been making my own cakes and frosting from scratch. This works out pretty well for me, since my sister and I are both gluten-free and we can’t always rely on there being GF box mixes.
I love getting to be a little creative with cakes, especially when it comes to decorating with buttercream frosting. Not only is the frosting easy to make (especially with a stand mixer), it can be dyed to any color needed! I bought a tool that would allow me to pipe three different colored buttercreams together to make some epic-looking cupcakes (red, orange, and yellow together really gives a flames effect!).
For Christmas, I made a ring of red and green flowers atop my two-tier cake.
Decorating is hands-down my favorite part of baking (though the cleanup with multiple colors is not).
While making buttercream isn’t too difficult, it really gives you the freedom to bring your cake vision to life!
